Depiction of Totapuri
Ramakrishna in his youth came to Dakshineshwar temple to resume the duties as a priest at the Mothers temple. He was unorthodax in worship and was lost in his own esctasy with the divine . He learnt Vaishnav Bhakti Marg,Tantra,Vedanta from various masters . We here will see the story about him and his guru Totapuri

Totapuri was called "Nangta" by Ramakrishna  meaning the naked one  since he had renounced the world and was in the supreme state of bliss and had realisation of the god. Totapuri arrived in Dakshineshwar at the end of 1864 .Totapuri was the follower of the Advaita philosophy of Adi Shankaracharya  . He had performed Sadhana for forty years on the banks of Narmada and had attained the vision of the supreme Brahman. Totapuri on his return of his pilgrimage stopped at Dakshineshwar  and came to know about Ramakrishna and met him and told him about Vedanata and Advaita teachings and decided to initiate Ramakrishna to  Vedanta Teachings. Totapuri beleived that a true "Sanyasin" only could understand the teachings of vedanta.  Sri Ramakrishna took permission from  his mother Kali and began to learn Vedanta from Totapuri . Ramakrishna was first instructed to perform a fire sacrifice and rennounce all bonds and belongings to the holy fire. Ramakrishna offered everything to the fire and became a sanyasin. Totapuri after the fire sacrifice started the teachings of the vedanta  he said

"Brahman",is the only reality, ever pure, ever illuminating, ever free, beyound time, space and causation though divided by name and form is free from Maya. When a seeker enters the state of samadhi he gets the realisation of brahman".

Sri Ramakrishna  was  a man who  had seen Maa Kali as everything till now as the all encompassing supreme being was now directed to give up the thought of the mother.
